1) New Video From Brooklyn's Department of Eagles. On March 24, as part of Poprally at The Museum of Modern Art (described on the website as "a program of events...that features collaborations with artists and musical acts, performances, film screenings, receptions, and special viewings of exhibitions at moderate prices" -- sounds good), this new video was debuted for "No One Does It Like You," directed by Patrick Daughters and Marcel Dzama (who put together this super sweet They Might Be Giants album art). Lots of blood, choreographed dancing...and ghosts. Coincidence that this video depicts the horrors of warfare and was debuted on the 51-year anniversary of Elvis Presley's induction into the U.S. army and the 608-year anniversary of the Turko-Mongol sacking of Damascus? I think not:
2) Bonnie "Prince" Billy is playing today, April 1 at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. I won't be able to make it, but I've grown a super-cool beard in his honor. He's also playing on April 2, at 8:00 p.m. at the El Rey, along with White Magic. Here he is, in the new video for "I Am Goodbye" off his new album Beware, engaging in one of my favorite activities, walking around alone in a city and singing:
3) Stereo Total, is also playing a show at the El Rey on April 4. I saw them at the Reykjavik Gay Pride in August of 2008 and can safely say that they were the SECOND best performers of the afternoon (behind Iceland's biggest domestic star Páll Óskar (who was amazing)). Stereo Total is fun-ish, if you are into "bands" like Electrocute. Here's the animated video for "L Amour a Trois":
4) Jeremy Jay is playing April 2 at the Smell with Princeton and the Tartans. The video for "Lite Beam" features Mr. Jay wearing a scarf, some guy with a beret, and a girl drummer whose facial expression makes it clear that she's way too cool to talk to you. The guy pulls it off somehow. Maybe someday he'll be L.A.'s Serge Gainsbourg. I'm surprised he's still playing such a small venue, so it may be wise to catch this while you can:
5) St. Vincent is playing at the Masonic Lodge at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on April 6. Here's a solid rehearsal &quotperformance" recorded at SXSW for the new song &quotAn Actor Out of Work" off of the upcoming release Actor (according to the L.A. Times "equally by film scores and the compositions of Igor Stravinsky":
