Photographer Zoe-Ruth Erwin has been sending us photos and notes as she tours with LA's Death to Anders on their way to SXSW in Austin, Texas. This time, lead Rob Danson sent a tour diary to accompany her pictures.
He writes, "About a month before our South by Southwest departure, I started writing a song called “Odessa.” I had Texas on my mind and in the song, I described the fascination of leaving California in order to experience a very different part of America. Today, somewhere in between Amarillo and Dallas, while driving through a vast expanse of limitless skies littered with a beautiful, rusty decomposition of modern architecture, I finished the song. Although the third and final verse hadn’t been written until today, we performed “Odessa” during our first three shows on tour – Flagstaff, Albuquerque, and Amarillo.
"Thus far, I would say that our best show was our first for the tour, where we played in the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona at the supposedly haunted Hotel Monte Vista. We played an hour long set and included such songs as "Doll," "Camera Lens," and "Marigold."
"The second show was at the Atomic Cantina in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Although we played a shorter set to fewer people, and had technical difficulties with the keyboard, we left Albuquerque with high spirits, excited to play in Texas.
"Last night was our first show ever in Texas. We performed at The 806, a great coffee shop / bar with the most friendly booker and great built in audience.
"As our first tour outside of California, I have wholeheartedly embraced this magnificent education and experience of traveling and playing to Austin, Texas. For these past three shows, we have been gigging along side the inspiring San Francisco band Birds & Batteries. This band has been extremely kind and inspiring to us, and our mutual inspiration for Americana has been well received by the crowds in each venue. We have also had the great fortune to be traveling with our amazing photographer Zoe Ruth, who has been documenting the entire tour and helping us sell our CDs. I have to say that thus far, our first experience touring to South by Southwest has been nothing short of incredible."
