The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "Since I Was a Child, I Did Not Know The Difference Between The Tame and Wild...")

Local bands take the spotlight this week, as touring bands are no competition for the bulging line ups that include some bills with three or four incredible acts.

 

The most wonderfully wild and hard-to-tame Fol Chen play a bon voyage set as they set forth on their first overseas dates, next week in London. Congratulations to a most deserving band. See them at The Echo on Thursday, where you can also thrill to the pyrotechnical display of Karin Tatoyan. HOORAY...HOORAY Radio Free Silver Lake is offering three, count 'em, three pairs of tickets for this fabulous show here!!! 

 

The only residencies I see listed this month are Castledoor, celebrating their recent release Shouting at Mountains, at Spaceland, and the fun, melodramatic pop of Oliver Future at The Echo. They are both top-notch acts that will have to duel it out each Monday.

 

An Olin and the Moon record release on Tuesday has an incredibly strong bill that includes Deep Sea Diver who really impressed me and Octavius last month. See what he wrote here.  And the Third Hella Hipster Hoedown promises to be another gut-buster, just like the last one. Wear boots.

Oliver Future begins his residency at The Echo with up and coming band, Useless Keys, who make beautiful, eerie music and were interviewed by Joe Fielder a couple of days ago. Castledoor (great photo above by Jeff Koga) play their celebratory power pop and employ Rockabilly/punksters The Monolators to help inaugurate their Spaceland residency. Psychedelic space/punk band, Pocahaunted are a band I've wanted to catch up with, and as they are about to go on a massive European tour, tonight may be the last chance for a while.

I'm ignorant of many of the acts tonight, so it might be a perfect chance to check out the swirling, dense indie rock of KLUM (above) at The Good Hurt,or sample the anti-mechanical-establishmentarianism message of Automatique that they package as pretty indie pop at 3 of Clubs. I very much like what I've heard from these bands.

A local line up that just blows the competition out of the water is Fol Chen, Karin Tatoyan (at right, photo by Anita Marto), Post Foetus and Wait.Think.Fast at The Echo. Wait.Think.Fast play a swirling, atmospheric international indie rock, Post Foetus, a dreamy instrument-heavy ambient rock. Then Karin Tatoyan will tear open the back of your head, stir your brains a little and leave you changed. And Fol Chen will make you understand what genre-bending means. They will be going to Europe for the second time when they cover the continent in September. How big this band will get, and how fast, is anyone's guess. Elaine Layabout returns with the third Hella Hipster Hoedown at Pehrspace. If the last one is any indication this will be a night to remember. Her bands tonight include Restavrant and Slang Chicken, who will surely get the crowd to their feet. Hoedown indeed! Unfortunately there's also Seasons, The Monolators and Spider Problem at Mr. T's Bowl. And The Fuxedos, Gliss and Marvelous Toy here and there.

I went to the Echo site and am finding it hard to believe that for 5 bucks you can see all the original members of The VU on Sunday....might be worth checking out
