Everyone loves the future. It's where we'll spend the rest of our lives, wear space helmets all the damn time, drive submarine cars to work, and yadda yadda that sort of thing....
But, most importantly? It seems like we'll be listening to a lot of great music there.
We asked a bunch of our favorite local musicians what they'll be up to next in 2010 -- and here's what they had to say.
Hunter Curra – The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra
We have a busy year ahead of us. We are putting the finishing touches on our first full length record. We are heading to SXSW in March and have a residency in April.
Aaron Kyle – Le Switch
We're in the process of finishing our second full length album.
Andy Siara – The Henry Clay People
Just recorded 19 songs recently w/ Aaron Espinoza at the Ship. We will pick the best ten for a new full-length which will be out in the Spring. Touring a bunch. Will have a very busy SXSW this year. More info on all of this in January.
Malcolm Sosa – Rademacher
I'm trying to complete a solo CD and embark on a new Rademacher full length. I am also trying to find time to work on a record with George Glass. The GG kids and I are discussing the idea of me engineering it at my little recording studio, which is flattering, exciting and a ton of work. (In case you haven't heard of them yet, George Glass is a Death to Anders spin-off that is looking to make a record in 2010. Nick and Pete.)
I have all the material for my new "solo" record and some demos and stuff. I think it is going to be called MALCOLM SOSA AND THE FIRE UNDER THE GLASS. The "Fire Under the Glass" is my backing band. And by backing band I mean random people who showed up to the sessions. I have two ideas for titles : "Drunk Punch" or "The Battle of Barstow". I'll send along a copy of one of the demo-ed songs for you to share or listen or whatever.
Most of the songs are about the rise and fall of an old LA based group called "Baby Hawk" that I used to be friends with. All based on true stuff. I think it'll have 5 -6 songs on it. Track listing should be something like this : 1) Magic Words 2) We Drove Home That Night 3) Silverlake Song 4) Baby Hawk Song 5) Then Came Brooklyn There are four new Rademacher songs ready to go to tape, just need to find the time to record them. Our new guitar player, Jonathan Hadden, is moving to New York sometime in the spring to pursue a career in male modeling, so we'll be having another lineup change soon.
I've been fooling around with the idea of scaling the group down to a duo. Like Wye Oak or Eagle + Talon. We'll see.
Jordan Huddock – Marvelous Toy & The Henry Clay People
Next for MT.... we're in the process of finishing up our first full-length which should be due out in february or march. we'll probably do some release show for it at some venue with some bands.
Mary & Eli - The Monolators & The Cobra Lilies
What's next for The Monolators: We have new remix of Don't Dance coming out from The Tleilaxu Music Machine that we're going to post on our blog right around the new year. We're planning a split 7" with UV Lights from Long Beach and, seperately, planning a summer tour in Europe 2010.
For Cobra Lilies: working on our new EP and hoping it will not take as long to put out as the first one. 4. Bands to look for in 2010: Birth! (Yes, that's with an exclamation point.) Doug is awesome and he has a new record coming out in, I believe, February. We loved his first one and are looking forward to the new one.
Geoff Geis – Pizza! & Big Whup
No predictions.
Carl Jordan – The Western States Motel
Well, I've demo'd 16 or 17 songs for a new western states motel album... Maybe finding a producer? That sounds expensive.
Jason & Colleen – The Spires
We have new record coming out early next year called Curved Space, so there should be lots of shows – glitter and truck loads of money in our future.
Wendy Wang – The Sweet Hurt, The Californian, & more.
Just finished recording my first full-length album, so figuring out what I should do with it. Also, I'm going to brush up on 2008 Tax laws.
Riaz – The French Semester
We will be in residency every Monday in January to promote the new EP release “Forces Afield”. Lots of amazing guests joining us and some surprises planned. Then another four or five song release ahead of a possible jump back over to Spain to hook up with Indienella for some dates there.
Aaron Embry – Amnion
Hey You You! I started writing some songs solo mio at the piano and I'm looking forward to recording them on my 1/2" 4track once we move to Nashville in March. Right now I'm finishing up the mixes for Avi Buffalo's record (they just tracked 4 more songs for it ).
I'm also going into the studio with Daniel Lanois and Alison Krauss for what could be the new Krauss/Plant record. Thrilled to say the least.
John Graney – The Californian
I'm guessing you mean "what's next FOR you?". Well, it's been a shaky start for The Californian, but next we start kicking ass and taking names. Our brand new EP will be released somewhere near April. Until then we will be doing a decent amount of gigging and finally showing people what we're all about. Once the EP is out, the gloves are off and people are going to have to deal with The Californian being in their face all the time.
With Rishi in Edinburgh, Scotland semi-permanently, we have been emailing track ideas back and forth. We had a successful studio date in October and another in 2 weeks, from those sessions we hope to put out an EP in late spring. So stay tuned, we're excited about some new sounds we're getting with our transatlantic writing mode.
We have a record coming out the first part of 2010 and we're writing the next one. and there's gonna be lots of shows.
Drew Denny -- Big Whup
My first museum show opens February 2010: Brain House at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe! Reclamation, an artist group I co-founded, is also contributing a project to that show-PLANETARIUM- and will host a concurrent show at Sea and Space in Highland Park called AQUARIUM which will feature a series of musical performances entitled RITUAL/MUSIC: a combination of music traditionally perceived as religious or ritualistic (i.e. Balinese gamelan, North Indian ensemble, African ensemble, etc.) and current underground "pop" performers who are adventurous enough to respond to/interpret the RITUAL/MUSIC prompt. In March, I'm touring to South by Southwest with Geoff Geis via PLANETARIUM and as many old folks' homes as I can find. Then it's back to LA to release the first Big Whup record. Summer 2010 will be full of music and preparation for Reclamation's TERRARIUM exhibition in the Netherlands-- We're installing a church to nature inside of a 500-year-old chapel!!
Eric “Cashew” Harding – Eagle-Winged Palace
Wrapping up video, preparing for EWP's debut full-length!
Josiah Mazzaschi – Light FM
SXSW 2010, Spring Tour, Fourth CD in the works, promoting, "Let There Be Light FM".
Diana Salier – The Ross Sea Party & Automatic Drawing
I've been working on some new music with Jon from Automatic Drawing and a handful of our friends. It's a fledgling, baby band. About 4 months old, still sleeps with a nightlight on. There are 6 of us -- a banjo player, 3 guitars, bass, drums, and sometimes an 80s Casio that I bought on eBay recently. Some of us sing too. It probably doesn't sound at all like what you're thinking. We've been writing since the end of August and are hoping to unveil something by spring 2010...!
Timothy Jordan – WALK
Recording as soon as we can.
