1) I am very pleased to direct your attention to yesterday's release of the video for the Happy Hollows' non-album track "Big Bad Wolf" from Spells on the Filter Magazine web site. I'm surprised it didn't make it on the album, as I think it is just as smart/accessible (that's what I say about the Happy Hollows, right?) as everything of their one-of-the-best-of-2009 album. As I've said before, I can't wait until these guys are as huge as they deserve to be. WATCH IT:
FYI, it is directed by Ryan Reichenfeld.
More FYI, their next show will be at the Troubadour on May 13, just a few blocks from my apartment.
Also, doesn't the video remind you a little bit of this one from the New Pornographers?:
2) Los Angeles based Dum Dum Girls have released a new video for Jail La La. These ladies kind of remind me of the indie girl froups from the mid-late 90s that we never seem to hear about anymore.
3) If you followed Geoff Geis' (of Pizza! and Big Whup) RFSL tour diary from SXSW
, you may have remembered this unusual run in between Oakland performer Hawnay Troof and a dog:
There were many musical highlights at Domy, but the best was Hawnay Troof. This was my second time to see him play, and it was my second time to be overwhelmed with joy as I did so. The guy has a very rare charisma and can somehow do the whole mega-persona thing while somehow coming across also as genuine and "down-to-earth." He is his own party band and his show was like a one man rave that got an adorable bulldog named Stella so excited that she started humping him like crazy. The dog was removed to safety after the first song, but she provided me with the best mental image that I have from the entire Austin experience- Vice Cooler, bent over on the stage, getting pounded from behind by a white bulldog while beckoning to "Pitchfork photographers."
Just in, video of the blessed event:
4) Also featuring dogs, grom L.A.'s Signals (former members of the Mae Shi), a new video for What Dreams.
Maybe I'm being overly associative today, but this reminds me of the video for Liars' Houseclouds (embedding disables...LAME!!!)
Signals will be at the Smell on April 6th.
5) Silverlake's The Useless Keys are playing at the Dakota Live Music Lounge in SANTA MONICA on April 4. Will the eastside migrate to the west for this???? Here's a live performance of "White Noise" at the Echo.
6) We're obviously two days late on this, but I think it would be irresponsible for me not to post the most talked about video of the day on the Yahoo front page, Erykah Badu's "Window Seat." As I'm sure you know, technically NSFW, which unfortunately is the location at which I'm watching it, due to my broken computer at home.
Permament link here if the youtube goes down.
Email me at RFSLjed at gmail dot com to tell me what I missed, tell me about the video your band is working on, or just finished, or just posted to Pitchfork or hell, I haven't seen any good footage of anyone stepping on a rake in a LONG time.
