Video Jed was discovered guarding a large stockpile of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords. Locked in the Tower of London, he will soon admit to his treachery. No stranger to conspiratorial plots himself, Aaron Kyle of Le Switch takes over VFSL this week. Le Switch play Spaceland October 4 in support of the Radars to the Sky Residency.

Hello – This is Aaron Kyle of Le Switch. I get to write this week’s Video Free Silver Lake! To be honest, I was going to write this blog entry about Gospel Music. I chose all the videos and was ready to make you listen to Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland. But then I went to dinner with some friends that are heading back to NY. We started talking about this music video thing and Kate Bush came up… So. Instead of me talking about other artists talking about the G-O-D, I’m going to talk about another god of sorts. Kate Bush.
In the beginning of this year, while listening to the radio on my way to work, I heard Laura Veirs’ song “Summer is The Champion” (July Flame). I instantly fell in love with it. I didn’t know anything about her as an artist and ended up buying the record the day it came out. As I was listening to July Flame I realized that it reminded me a lot of Kate Bush and that’s why I was so into it. It wasn’t an overwhelming, smash you over the head thing but certain elements definitely came through, like drums, rhythm arrangements, and even background vocals too.
The other single from that record “Hounds of Love” is also the title of the record. This video is definitely one of the more “normal” videos. It’s one my favorites as it shows that Kate Bush really enjoys acting as much and she does singing and dancing. There was an awesome 8-part documentary on pitchfork.tv about her and there’s a whole segment dedicated to the recording of this record. The documentary was pretty cool because it went album by album and showed her home studio. It also touched on all the sequencers/keyboards she worked with to make this record which focused on the possibilities of new technologies of the 80’s and restrictions of the old. If it’s still there you should watch it.
If you dig deeper into her earlier stuff like her first single “Wuthering Heights” which was somehow an International Hit (Wikipedia) in 1978. The video speaks for itself as she makes some of the most amazing facial expressions in it.
There’s so much content on her as she’s had a long career but this next video is apparently from ABBA's Snowtime Special in 1979 which, if you think about it… Of course ABBA had their own Snowtime Special! The whole video is of her dancing/crawling around in a chair next to an Xmas tree. Let me reiterate - The whole video is of her dancing/crawling around in a chair next to an Xmas tree! Not many artists could pull that off and still have a career.
