Other Lives returns to the Satellite tomorrow opening for the Rosebuds. The Stillwater, Oklahoma band plays lush, orchestrated, haunted layered compositions that equally evoke forest rock stranded in the desert and minimal composers along the lines of Phillip Glass. If you missed them last month when their show coincided with the Silver Lake Jubilee, Friday’s show may be the last time to see them play a small room. Their next Los Angeles show is in September at the Shrine Auditorium with Bon Iver. Excerpts from my recent interview with Other Lives frontman Jesse Tabish follow.
Looking for a quiet place to take an important call, I tell the other crew guys at my job, “I’m going to need the freight elevator until the end of lunch.” The appointment for my phone interview with Jesse Tabish of Other Lives has conveniently aligned with the break schedule on the gallery project I am working on. As the door of the freight metallically clangs shut I am connected by phone to a bandleader in Oklahoma.
Kathryn Pinto: How was playing the Satellite last time (in May)?
Jesse Tabish: It was really good [in] May, a really good, lively crowd. That’s always so much fun... I’m looking forward to playing there again. It’s a great room and we have a lot of friends and our label’s in LA. It just a fun second home.
KP: How was the process of making the album?
JT: It took quite some time [to make the album]... We decided this time we wanted to self-produce and self-engineer so we decided to do it at home. It took every day—it was a real nine to five job—every day me writing in the morning, to Jon [Mooney] editing at night. So me and Jon really split the tasks. He would do a lot of the technical. You know the editing alone took such a long time. Since we were doing it for ourselves we had to figure out our process and we basically created every song note by note from the start.
KP: What did you think when you heard you were going to be touring with Bon Iver?
JT: I was really pleasantly surprised. I can’t wait, I think it’s going to be a really good thing for us. I’m really, really thrilled by it. I haven’t met any of those guys yet, I’m looking forward to it.
KP: Have you listened to the new Bon Iver record yet?
JT: I’ve heard the first couple songs [of Bon Iver, Bon Iver]. I really enjoyed it, but I need to do a quiet sit-down.
KP: From what you’ve heard so far, the new Bon Iver record: it’s make-out music, or not make-out music?
JT: Make out, or not make out? I’d definitely say make-out, yeah.
Other Lives and Daniel Hart open for The Rosebuds at the Satellite Friday July 1, $12.00, Doors: 8:30.
