Any week with an EELS concert is a good week to me and even though there's been no new music from the band in a year or so I'm still super-excited to see this "Tremendous Dynamite" tour when it lands at El Rey on Saturday. Shown at right, Mark Everett's life and career are a triumph of overcoming adversity with the powerful tool of a creative mind and I get a lot of inspiration from his writing and his music. This highly lauded tour, featuring The Submarines, is only here one night.
Vetiver is back at The Troubadour on Wednesday with a new album of catchy indie folk music, and The Decemberists fill up The Greek with their brainy indie pop on Friday.
Locally we have Seasons wandering onto the Sunset Strip to play the Family of the Year show at The Roxy on Thursday. The Henry Clay People open for The Get Up Kids at The Satellite on Saturday and Monday and Tuesday have a whole host of great local acts. Check it out...

DECISION:
The real treasures for me tonight are in the supporting acts on some of the bills across town beginning in Hollywood at "School Night!", with the excellent Pollyn and a DJ set by Brooklyn based Chairlift, supporting a good show with Caught a Ghost as headliner at Bardot. The local alt/country indie scene in well represented by Cave Country (shown above) on the Robert Francis residency at Bootleg Bar, and Whispering Pines, along with Infantree, play the Stone Darling show at The Satellite. The Ross Sea Party have Spirit Vine and a band I keep hearing good things about, The Dead Ships, for their Monday night show at Silver Lake Lounge.

DECISION:
The second Tuesday night for Judson McKinney's residency over at The Central boasts Cody The Band on the bill. Congratulations to Cody and Joanna at right. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this club when I first visited there last Tuesday. Great idea to separate the bar from the performance space and I like the high stage affording everyone in the room a clear view. Wet and Reckless play The Satellite and The Tyde are on the bill with Allah Las at The Echo.

DECISION:
I have always enjoyed Vetiver (at right) in concert, and he's currently touring his superbly tuneful new album, The Errant Charm, which sounds even better than his last album, Tight Knit. He's at The Troubadour tonight, and I know, once I get and really digest his new album, I will kick myself for missing this show. Also tonight, the LA Weekly "Replay: LA"series at Hollywood's Hard Rock Cafe, where local indie bands cover favorite classic albums, has Nite Jewel playing Kraftwerk's Computerworld .

DECISION:
What an amazing amount of shows tonight, but I'm determined to get over to see Seasons make their Sunset Strip debut at The Roxy with Family of the Year. Going to the Sunset Strip to see East Side bands is always interesting in the odd range of audience that frequents those clubs. There's always a contingent that seem barely aware there's even music playing, but when enough active fans show up it can tip the scales toward a warm band/audience rapport. And I haven't been to The Roxy in ages. Vanish Valley are also doing a show over at Taix Lounge I'd like to attend. Nice show at The Echo with LA Font and Terraplane Sun.

- Triple Dog Dare, Echoes from the Sun, Chop Suzy, The Budrows, Grindsound @ Mr. T's Bowl
- Catwalk, Pep Talk, Crippled Puppies, Pretty Wife @ The Smell
DECISION:
I make it a habit never to miss EELS whenever they play in town and tonight is no exception. Their current tour is called "Tremendous Dynamite" and since there has been no new album since they released two last year, End Times in January, and Tomorrow Morning in August, I expect much of the program tonight at El Rey will consist of that material, which found writer Mark Everett seemingly at peace and writing music that was positively upbeat. I understand this tour reflects that attitude and as Mark is quoted on his website: "The whole goal is about feeling good about life and rejuvenated". L.A. band, The Submarines have been along for the tour.
The Decemberists perform their heady mix of indie pop for an adoring crowd at The Greek. And on the local scene Dirt Bird has a show at Taix Lounge, Schuyler Fisk is at The Mint and LA Font are at Casey's.
