Time to get back to work after a four day weekend and December gets off to a roaring start with a pretty busy week of shows. There's a big benefit for KCRW on Saturday night to help keep them going called ARE FRIENDS ECLECTIC? at the Orpheum Theatre with the likes of the superb Iron and Wine, the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the new amazing upstarts The Belle Brigade and the delightful world music mix of Mia Doi Todd among many others. Help support the cause.
We at Radio Free Silver Lake are presenting a couple of shows this week, with the final residency at The Roxy - On The Rox on Tuesday for The Western States Motel. They go out in high style with a couple of top-notch bands, The Californian and Wires In The Walls on the bill. Then on Wednesday we proudly present a record release show for I Have To Try For Her for Duniven at Bootleg featuring a bunch of great bands.
Incan Abraham have quite a week, playing "School Night!" at Bardot on Monday and ending up at The Wiltern on Saturday, opening for Beady Eye. Good for them! And Feed Your Head is hosting it's fourth monthly show with Seasons on Saturday at Lot 1.

DECISION:
A busy Monday night as the residency of Hi Ho Silver Oh at Silver Lake Lounge features the fantastically talented Naive Thieves, Vanaprasta has the heavy hitting line up of Voxhaul Broadcast, Chasing Kings and Summer Darling at The Satellite, and The Bootleg hosts The Driftwood Singers, LA Font and Count Fleet as openers for the residency of Little Hurricane. Fans of far-ranging instrumental metal rock can get their fix with one of my favorite examples of that genre, Chicago's Russian Circles, supporting a new album called Empros, and members of Red Sparowes called Marriages provide opening support tonight at The Troubadour.
And rock legend, Sting, celebrates his 60th birthday with a concert tour that includes three L.A. dates in the perfect environment of The Wiltern, today through Wednesday. Good chance to catch up with this influential and still potent artist as he still seems to be performing at the peak of his powers. Not only was I a huge fan of The Police, but I have also enjoyed his solo career, as well as being an admirer of David Lynch's moody, atmospheric and wonderfully lugubrious version of Dune, in which he acted (above).

- The Sister Ruby Band, The Absolute, Nacosta, Chapa @ El Cid
DECISION:
The Western States Motel are back for their final residency night at The Roxy - On The Rox, and with a line up that includes The Californian (at right) and Wires In The Walls this should be a fine final installment that we at Radio Free Silver Lake have enjoyed presenting this month along with KROQ Locals Only.
There's power in the supporting band line up tonight as lots of up and coming talent is showcased across town. Though I've only seen him once or twice, John Gold impressed me enough with his writing and his voice that I've not forgotten his music, and tonight he's at The Bootleg with Sonos and Liz Pappedemas. The infectious mayhem that accompanies any performance by The Mormons will be wrought on the Redwood Bar as they open for the final Pu$$y Cow residency night. Races are at The Central with Kiev and Sun Araw open for CAVE at The Satellite. And who are Toilet Babies, who are opening for Downtown/Union at The Echo.

DECISION:
Duniven (seen recently at Silver Lake Lounge (at right) is having a record release show for I Need To Try For Her that Radio Free Silver Lake is proud to host at Bootleg Bar that is also a record release show for Liquid Love Letter. With The Bixby Knolls and Broadcast Station booked this is the place to be, unless one is going to the final night of Sting at The Wiltern.

DECISION:
I have to say that, although My Morning Jacket would be considered a mainstream, commercial band, I really did enjoy their show at The Greek last year when Avi Buffalo opened for them. It was a tight, professional set with a varied selection of songs. Tonight they're in town at Gibson Amphitheatre with Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings.
Locals-wise there's The Entrance Band at Bootleg and Shadow Shadow Shade open for Hurricane Bells at The Satellite.

DECISION:
Can't believe it's time for my fourth Feed Your Head showcase at Lot 1 and I'm especially happy to be presenting my dear friends, Seasons (at right), as they are about to release their latest EP in January. Good buddies, The Happy Casualties are also on the bill, along with the enigmatic Azalia Snail and the new-to-me N O W.
There's also the big KCRW Benefit at The Orpheum trying to raise money to continue programming now that the Republicans have successfully demonized Public Broadcasting to the point where a gullible public believes it to be a Communist outfit and have proceeded, with figurative pitchforks and torches, to stop any government funding. Artists on the right side of this issue scheduled to perform at ARE FRIENDS ECLECTIC? include Iron And Wine, Jimmy Cliff, The Belle Brigade, Mia Doi Todd and lots others. It's expensive, but for a really worthy cause.
I usually try to attend any show by The Black Heart Procession and tonight's show at The Satellite is especially tempting with Dirt Bird...but I have to attend my own show.
Sunday, December 4
- Judson McKinney record release, Count Fleet, The Lonely Wild, Fort King @ Bootleg Bar
- Foolproof Four @ Origami Vinyl
- Shannon McNally, Greg Leisz @ McCabe's
- String Fellow Hawks, Mike Gibbons, The Pennant, Alexandra & the Starlight Band @ Hotel Cafe
- Scout Niblett, Tom Brosseau, Picastro @ Sanctuary Church
- Wax, George Walsky @ The Troubadour
- Daniel Ahearn and the Jones, Taylor Locke and the Roughs, The Deep Dark Woods @ The Satellite
DECISION:
This could be my choice for the show of the week with Judson McKinney celebrating a record release at Bootleg Bar with some really extraordinary bands. Count Fleet are growing ever more popular with their efficient indie-rock. The Lonely Wild are probably my favorite find last year and Fort KIng has had me in his thrall for a few years already. A great chance to hear a night full of wonderful music. Good show at The Satellite too.
