It would be so easy to go out every night this week, but that's just not going to be possible, so I'll try to pick and choose judiciously. Tenlons Fort (at right) was so impressive last week at my Lot 1 show Saturday night (and at Pehrspace on Friday, I hear) that one should really try to get over to the Seasons residency night at The Echo, presented by Web In Front on Monday, to see one of his last shows before he leaves town again. He has, once again, assembled a band of hugely talented individuals, John Seasons, Sheridan Riley and Will Courtney, who give give familiar material a new, exciting twist and make the new songs their own.
Marvelous Toy are having a Record Release party at Bootleg Bar on Friday on a bill with Ozma. This Marvelous Toy album, entitled Not Moving, has been a long time coming, but has been anticipated by incredibly positive buzz. (LITTLE REVISION): As a huge fan of Dead Meadow I would love to go to The Satellite on to see lead singer Jason Simon in a solo set on Tuesday night. (This was originally set for Thursday, hence the change) But I'll be at Hotel Cafe seeing Little Red Lung and Pisces.
Performers I haven't seen in a while who resurface this week include Kind Hearts & Coronets, who are on the Seasons residency bill Monday and Aaron Embry (of Amnion) is in a show at Bootleg Bar on Sunday.
Monday, January 9
- Seasons, Tenlons Fort, Judson, Kind Hearts & Coronets @ The Echo
- Princeton, TV Girl, LANME @ Bootleg Bar
- Chasing Kings, The Young, Holy Water Buffalo @ The Satellite
- "The 4th Annual Pomona Rib Cookoff" w/ NASA Space Universe, Green Screen Door, Two Kyles One Scott, Gorgon Zoloft @ Pehrspace
- "School Night!" w/ Van Hunt, Tycho, Jacuzzi Boys @ Bardot
- Vinnie Ferra, Brian Marquis, Meekos and Me, The Remainers @ Silver Lake Lounge
- PK, Terraplane Sun, Yellow Red Sparks, Forest City Lovers, Little Lo @ Hotel Cafe
- Natasha Leggero Has Words with Friends @ Largo at the Coronet
DECISION:
First is a series of tough choices coming from the Monday night residencies. Seasons have managed to come up with one of the best residency schedules I've ever seen and tonight's bill is both strong and intriguing. Strong because Judson is one of the most reliable performers around and Tenlons Fort blew me away with a beautiful set at my show last Saturday night at Lot 1 (see intro). Intriguing because of Kind Hearts & Coronets (above), who were on the bill of the first show I ever attended at The Echo in May 2006, when I was in hot pursuit of Irving, who were among the first of a half dozen local bands that turned me into a groupie. I remember being very impressed with KH&C at that show, but then they disappeared, only to resurface when I suddenly began to hear about them again late last year and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. By the way, the new EP, Autumn, that Seasons released last week is already one of the best releases of the year. Outstanding job of recording this band and highlighting the new instruments they employ and perfectly capturing Nik Garcia's ability to scream like a demon possessed, then, in a second, sound like a sweet angel.
Also the first of a couple of good nights at Hotel Cafe commences tonight with Yellow Red Sparks and Terraplane Sun, as more and more bands I want to see keep popping up there.

- The Carrions, Summer Lovebirds, Some Go Haunting @ Silver Lake Lounge

DECISION:
Tonight I have an invite to see and review Little Red Lung at Hotel Cafe, along with Sarah Negahdari's newest project, Pisces, both of whom I have been trying to catch up with recently, so now's the time. Buzzbands has their Tuesday Songwriter's event at Lot 1 with Correatown, Will Courtney and College Kids among this hot bill. Touché plays their residency at The Central with The Sweet Hurt and Olin and the Moon and Paulie Pesh are at The Echo. (REVISION): I originally had Jason Simon (seen below) on the bill for Thursday's Satellite show, but now it's moved to tonight so I have to miss it. Boo! I've seen Dead Meadow a bunch of times but only met Jason at their last show in November at The Satellite and he was a real gentleman about a gushing fan going on about how great Dead Meadow are. I want to get to know his solo work

DECISION:
Our friend, Duniven (at right), is on a strong bill with Voxhaul Broadcast and NO at The Satellite tonight and I've been hearing good things about NO, Duniven continues to perform songs terrific live sets from his recent CD I Need To Try For Her, and Voxhaul Braodcast are an institution. Now Risers have been added to the bill, making this one of the weeks highlights.

DECISION:
I really wanted to see Jason Simon (of Dead Meadow) in his solo show at the Robert Schwartzman program at The Satellite, but it was switched to Tuesday, so I must miss it. I do so at the expense of a lot of other good shows. Including Nicole Kidman at Origami Vinyl and Geronimo Getty (above) at 1642.

DECISION:
Another band that is very important to me is having their Record Release party over at Bootleg Bar tonight with Ozma. Marvelous Toy have been incredibly supportive of my venture into blogging and it only seems fair to me to return the favor and attend this show. Apart from the fact that I've heard raves about Not Moving, they are renown for their live performances.
Also tonight there are sets by The Ross Sea Party with Swahili Blonde over at The Central and Tall Tales and The Silver Lining and Evan apRoberts play at Echo Country Outpost.
Saturday, January 14
- The Knocks, DWNTWN @ The Satellite
- Gathering of the Bestial Legion V @ The Echo & Echoplex

- The Carrions, Glass Goblins, Tomorrows Tulips @ Echo Country Outpost
- NOFX, Lagwagon, Old Man Markley @ House of Blues
- Dave Alvin @ McCabe's (8 & 10PM)
DECISION:
Tons of shows tonight, but, apart from the show at Echo Country Outpost, I don't know much about a lot of the bands. I will say that I was mightily intrigued by the highly-charged political music videos of NOFX (at right) in the waning days of the Bush Administration and they're probably still pretty relentless, with all the ammunition out there during this Republican clown-car presidential race, so I've no doubt their show at the House of Blues would be very entertaining...and full of some welcome anarchy.
Sunday, January 15
- Aaron Embry, Last in Class, Daniel Ahearn and the Jones, Eleni Mandell @ Bootleg Bar
- Dave Alvin @ McCabe's
- Honor Flow Productions @ The Troubdour
- Restavrant record release, The Dirt Daubers, Two Man Gentleman Band @ The Satellite
- The Slits Nite w/ members of Vivian Girls, Rainbow Arabia, Tamaryn, Telepathe, White Magic, Raw Geronimo @ The Echo
DECISION:
It's been so long since I've seen Aaron Embry perform that I'm really looking forward to this stellar show at the Bootleg with Eleni Mandell and Daniel Ahearn on this potent bill. Quite an exciting time for a Sunday night. It's a good week for bands returning to the stage. And don't forget, Restavrant have a Record Release at The Satellite.
Isn't that enough? RFSLshowlistings@gmail.com
