Sometimes I think I need to move downtown in order to keep up with a lot of new bands. There's more and more shows going on down there featuring the latest additions to the music scene. I feel like I'm slighting a lot of bands that need paying attention to. There are more new bands popping up
Radio Free Silver Lake host two shows this week. Monday night we present the first night of Judson McKinney's residency at Silver Lake Lounge and Friday we play host to the second residency night for Death To Anders downtown at Casey's Bar. I haven't been down to this bar before so it will be a new adventure. And it's a powerfully good bill.
Judy Collins had a major impact on me back when I was discovering the folk roots of the rock and roll I was obsessed with around 1968. Still sounding much the same, she plays a show featuring songs from that era with guitar and piano at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday.

- "School Night!" w/ LA Font, New Division @ Bardot

- The Mae Shi, Totally Radd!!, LACO$TE, The Pope @ Pehrspace
DECISION:
Radio Free Silver Lake is proud to present the first Monday night of Judson McKinney's February residency at Silver Lake Lounge. With so much wind at his back, it's not surprising that Judson keeps getting residency after residency, showing how much faith the local music community has for this remarkable artist. With so many local musicians anxious to play with him, he always has top-tier talent behind him. Tonight the opening bands are long-time friends of RFSL including Andrew Lynch and Kind Hearts and Coronets.
The Mae Shi are getting back together for a reunion show at Pehrspace (can you see the flyer) to celebrate Kyle Mabson's birthday, and with the original line up of Laco$te also appearing, they're bound to party like it's 2005, like the promotion says. Incan Abraham are beginning a residency at Bootleg Bar with a super bill featuring Hands and Masxs. Great show at The Satellite with Youngblood Hawke headlining Yellow Red Sparks and Useless Keys.

DECISION:
I was a sucker for the indie/folk/carnivalesque theatricality of Breathe Owl Breathe (at left) when I saw them for the first time at Bootleg two years ago. Their gorgeous, classically structured songcraft left me, well...breathless. A unique artistic vision is at work here, incorporating such varied influences of world music as diverse as Japanese wood blocks or a Mariachi band or jazz, to name just a few. Remarkably, they come up with a coherent style. With Daniel Ahearn and The Jones also opening for Laura Gibson at The Echo, this becomes one of the highlights of the week.
Markéta Irglová is in town for a show at Hotel Cafe, a perfect setting to compliment the personal and revealing songs she writes. An Oscar winner for co-authoring the song "Falling Slowly" with Glen Hansard from the movie Once, she is now forging an acclaimed career of her own.

DECISION:
Tonight is the second Death To Anders (see Rob at right) residency night downtown at Casey's Bar, and with local superstars, Manhattan Murder Mystery and The Health Club on the bill, I am especially glad Radio Free Silver Lake is promoting it. Elsewhere, Deap Vally play The Satellite, while Judy Collins performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Judy Collins was absolutely crucial to my introduction into the folk movement that was exploding in the sixties. In my first year of college (Fall 1968), her album Wildflowers was a must-have for every serious record collector and introduced a wide audience to the work of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. It was real hard to keep up with all the albums coming out that year, but this one stood out. Her voice is every bit as crystalline as it ever was and chances to see her are becoming rarer.
