by Brad Roberts
It's kind of a lightweight week on the show front. A good time looks to be The Tribute to Tom Petty at The Satellite on Tuesday night. The Californian, Robert Francis and Duniven are just two of the artists performing Petty tunes with their own characteristic flavor. The Ross Sea Party are having a kick off for their new album, Hotel Pool, at the Bootleg on Wednesday, and Amanda Jo Williams and Tommy Santee Klaws have a Friday show at Echo Country Outpost sharing their adventurous creativity in an inspiring setting.
The Music Festivals seem to have stopped at the moment, and what a relief. In 2012, Los Angeles may have maxed out on the number of festival one city can hold in one year. I don't remember another year like it. The last three weeks have been an almost non-stop run of concerts, and a light week sounds good to me. So many overwhelming shows including Grizzly Bear at The Greek last week, which was inspirational (review coming), the fantastic record release party for The World Record, the tenth anniversary show for The Monolators, Menomena, Amanda Palmer, Earlimart and The Album Leaf. Some of my favorite bands all in the space of three weeks.
It's only October and I started thinking about the best albums of the year and already have about 17 serious contenders for the 10 Best from just my first run through. And I know I've left some out. As for the immediate future, I'm looking forward to the new Pinback album, Information Retrieved, coming out on Tuesday.
And now on to the shows of the week.

- Robert DeLong, LA-Ex, Five Knives @ Echoplex
- Superhumanoids, James Supercave, Gothic Tropic @ The Echo
DECISION:
It's been too long since Bikos have played in town, so tonight get over to the Last in Class residency at The Satellite with the added thrill of Ferraby Lionhart and Shark Toys. Of all the strong residency bookings tonight, this looks to be the strongest. But don't neglect the other residencies like Superhumanoids with Gothic Tropic at The Echo, or Kera and the Lesbians, with Sister Ruby Band and Kind Hearts and Coronets at The Bootleg. Matthew Teardrop is doing a couple of solo shows this week, tonight part of a Sean Carnage Monday at Pehrspace. The rest of that bill is pretty radical too, like the Teardrop.

DECISION:
The Tribute to Tom Petty sounds like a really good show at The Satellite, which features Brian Whelan and Mitch Marine, The Californian, Duniven, Geronimo Getty and The Blank Tapes (at right) doing their interpretations of Petty. All thee artist owe something of their style to Tom Petty and it will be fascinating to see them honor the source. The Ross Sea Party are celebrating the release of their debut full-length album, Hotel Pool at the Bootleg Bar, which is also a celebration of the release of a new video for United Ghosts. "Desert Nights" is presenting I See Hawks In L.A. at The Standard on the Strip.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Hollywood Bowl. Few rock and roll legends are as deserving of their exalted reputations as this one. I saw Neil Young in an acoustic performance at the Music Hall in Boston in 1970, when he was playing material from After the Goldrush, and I've never forgotten it. That album is also worthy of it's reputation, and is obviously still influential, as over the past five years I've heard more local bands cover his music than probably any other artist.

I would also recommend Nick Waterhouse, who is sharing the El Rey stage with up-and-coming locals, Allah Las (at right). Congrats to them.
