It's a pretty local-centric week with most of the major houses shuttered, leaving a void that the homegrown bands fill in nicely. The Living Sisters are featured in two showcases this week to celebrate the release of their album, Run For Cover, which will be released on Tuesday. I have been a long-time fan of each of the original three ladies, Eleni Mandell, Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) and Inara George (The Bird and The Bee), so to learn that Alex Lilly (Touché) has become the newest "sister", makes the former trio seem like an even more wonderful quartet. They have a release day party at El Prado on Tuesday, and appear as the opener for Steve Earle & Allison Moorer at Royce Hall on Saturday night, the 12th.
The January residencies kick off with the apocalyptic/doom and gloom rock of Feeding People at The Echo, bluesy garage-rock from Them Howling Bones at Los Globos, rock-and-soul with Yellow Alex at The Satellite, and funk rock poet PAPA at Bootleg Bar.
Bands I'd like to catch up with this week include bikos at The Central on Monday, and Hi Ho Silver Oh and Charlyne Yi are having a party to celebrate a West Coast tour on Saturday at Echo Country Outpost. Next week picks up with shows by Calexico at El Rey, to make up for the power outage that halted their show at The Fonda on a windy night last October, and Pinback, finishing up their current tour, at the same venue.
