An incredibly festive musical week here with too many choices every night. Beginning with the holiday of President's Day, many had a three-day weekend and Monday is really 'Sunday 2' so go out to see some of the best bands in town, and all for free. Amazing lineups populate the free February residencies like Gliss, Touché (pictured at right), Tic Tic Boom and Baron von Luxxury at Los Globos for instance. There's also the RFSL-approved Wires in the Walls residency at Silver Lake Lounge with a super supporting lineup. Check the Monday listings for the other tempting bills.
Big week for fans of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds who are back for a show at The Fonda on Thursday. This concert is also being streamed live on YouTube at youtube.com/nickcavelive so everyone can join in the excitement of this legendary band, celebrating their 30th year. Also taking place are a Tribute to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds by The Bad Seedlings at Footsies on Monday, and there's the Nick C ave album signing at Amoeba on Friday at 4:30.
If you've never seen The Janks, you owe it to yourself to show up at either The Piano Bar on Tuesday or O'Brien's Irish Pub on Thursday. I've seen them deliver two powerhouse sets in the last few weeks. Another band doing double-duty this week is Dirt Dress, appearing at both The Smell on Saturday and before that on Tuesday as part of a big bill at Echoplex with The Lovely Bad Things, Pangea and Summer Twins. More dirt later in the week when Dirt Bird is featured as part of a show billing itself as "A Musical Seance" for an evening of art, poetry and music at HM 157 on Sunday.
Working on my new laptop has it's challenges, so forgive the brevity of this week's edition.

Unbelievable night of great shows that emphasizes what a fertile musical landscape we have here in Los Angeles featuring new bands on the verge of taking off. 2013 could see a lot of our favorite bands coming the forefront. Daniel Ahearn and the Jones are playing for A House For Lions at Echoplex, Torches blaze up the stage at The Satellite for The Mowgli's, and Sun Araw open an evening of psychedelia with OM in Eagle Rock at The Center for the Arts. As for myself, I'll be jogging between Los Globos for Gliss and Touché and the Silver Lake Lounge to catch a set by George Glass (above) who blew away Lot 1 when they played my show on February 2. They're playing for the Wires in the Walls residency with Escalator Hill. Another great show!
