Halloween is this Saturday so there are lots of scarifying shows coming your way, including the annual Day of the Dead Celebration at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which is one of my favorite events of the year. Usually. That is unless I have a competing show at Lot 1, which happens to be the case this year. And what a show it is. Put together by Ben Golomb, it is a heavy weight line up that includes some of my favorite bands in town. Feed Your Head presents Lo-fi acid rock from Modern Time Machines, powerhouse heavy rock from Shirley Rolls, the rhythmic, indie ballads of Saint Sea Hat and a new band to me I'm excited to hear, Light As A Feather at Lot 1. That's on Saturday.
Murder Ballads is another extravaganza in the spirit of the season which features the tremendous talents of Joel Jerome, Z Berg, Spindrift, Bloody Death Skull, Old Testament, Pearl Charles, Brothers Zmed, and many more, each performing a thematically related song. This happens at Echoplex on Tuesday. Bring your inner demons out for a holiday.
More Halloween shows include Haunted Honky Tonk Hacienda at El Cid with Leslie Stevens and Jonathan Tyler on Thursday, and O'Death, by virtue of their name, becomes a Halloween show at The Echo, also on Thursday. Dustbowl Revival provide an actual Halloween show on Halloween day on Friday at Del Monte Speakeasy at The Townhouse in Venice.
Other local favs of mine playing this week include yOya at Bootleg HiFi on Tuesday, Wages and Tall Tales and The Silver Linings opening for The Tulips at Silver Lake Lounge on Wednesday. On Thursday The Airborne Toxic Event are at The Greek, and Wet & Reckless play Bootleg HiFi on Friday.
Saturday night, October 25th I enjoyed my first row seat (shown at right) at The Orpheum for the fabulous second night of the Los Angeles engagement of Broken Bells, who played the most polished and perfectly balanced show I've yet seen from them. They are earning their superstar status. James Mercer's voice it truly a wonder and he fronts the band with obvious joy, style and assurance. A great night!
