There was no small amount of ridiculousness to blame for a delay in the RFSL's latest regular quarterly mix, but whatever. Excuses, excuses... It's finally here.
Here's the skinny: every few months, we check in with some of our favorite LA bands to see if they have new songs or demo tracks they're willing to share. From there, we assemble them into a mix what you can hopefully listen to from beginning to end and enjoy. (You can find past collections on our mix page.)
There's a lot of yet-to-be-released material here this time. We like to think that it represents some of the best new work from LA's vibrant local music scene.
Here's what's on it:
1) Rademacher - "Magic Words" - From their next release... A very different sound for the group and catchy as all-fucking-get-out
2) Death to Anders - "Handshakes and Earthquakes" - There are two types of people: ones who like Death to Anders and ones who haven't heard this new song yet.
3) WALK - "Last Stand" - You might not have heard these guys yet, but you should try to hear them play out. (Like, this weekend.)
4) Useless Keys - "White Noise" - An EP track from the shoegaze rock specialists who're playing The Echo's February residency.
5) Radars to the Sky - "Selfish Kids" - An early treat from their next album, which is being produced by Dave Newton (who also produced The Henry Clay People, The Happy Hollows, and so on).
6) Buddy - "Campfire" - Who's catchier than Buddy? No one, that's who. This is off his/their next album.
7) Big Whup - "Boniz Heart" - Some of the folks from experimental charmers Pizza! play in this great new pop act.
8) The Californian - "Na Na Na" - From what we've heard of their upcoming album, it's going to be one of our favorites of 2010.
9) Amnion - "Happiness Right Where You Are" - Enjoy these guys while you can. They're skipping town soon. (Booo.)
10) The French Semester - "The Greater Good" - Off their new EP. If you missed their Spaceland residency this month, make sure you catch one of their recently-announced shows in LA.
11) The Western States Motel - "The Cliff" - You might've heard Carl and co. play this one live. It's the first song off their next release.
12) Light FM - "Keep on Looking on the Bright Side" - One of the best tracks off their recent album Let There Be Light FM.
13) Swiss Bank Account - "I Want You I Need You You Have to be my Lover" - You know Brian Canning from Afternoons and Irving? This is his dancey electronic side project.
14) Marvelous Toy - "The Subway Driver" - Sounds like these guys are reinventing themselves yet again.
15) Andrew Lynch - "A Big Wall to Climb" - Off his soon-to-be-released album Sun Incisions... There's a record release event for it on February 25th at The Echo.
16) Eagle-Winged Palace - "Breaking Down The Wilderness" - From the freak folk act's upcoming album.
17) Night of Heroes - "Summer Forever" - The perfect soundtrack for coming down after a night of recreational drug use. (Dear work: Just kidding.)
18) Molino - "Looking For You" - A new shoegazey act who are really worth keeping an eye out for.
19) Signal Hill - "Men Before Us" - No RFSL mix feels complete without something from these local post rock greats...
Want them all? Here's a link with all of the songs together along with an iPod track listing to easily put them in order.
