This weekend August 21-22, 2010 is the 30th Anniversary Sunset Junction Street Fair in Silver Lake. Before I moved to L.A., I used to imagine my future self strolling out of my very cool apartment and meeting my band friends to go watch our other band friends play at Sunset Junction. Did I mention that in this montage sequence no one gets sunburned, the salsa and the men are always hot and the beer is always cold (and free)? I can't promise free drinks, but there will be bands (and tacos!). RFSL editors Brad Roberts and yours truly Ms. Pinto weigh in on our most anticipated acts of Sunset Junction 2010.
Brad Roberts - Senior Editor, Super FanOn Saturday afternoon on The Fold Stage I'm going to get to see three acts I've long been interested in and have never seen before. All of whom I feel certain I will like.
Ever since I heard there was something called The Silver Lake Chorus, I've been intrigued. The idea of up to 25 singers performing indie rock covers could be either horrifyingly cute or truly inspired, though reaction has been positive. They open the day at 1 PM.
Moses Campbell have been playing all over town, repeatedly, over the last few months and with glowing press, their explosive sound will be a delightful contrast to The Silver Lake Chorus, who they follow at 2 PM.
Eastern Conference Champions play at 6:15 and this band already has a long and storied career after a barely six year run. Critical darlings and audience favorites I really like their urgent, propulsive sound.
The rest of the Fold Stage schedule on Saturday is pretty good, but I just wanted to highlight bands I haven't seen before.
Kathryn Pinto - Managing Editor, Recluse
Bad Brains: I'm lucky enough to have had a cool older brother growing up. A brother who would freak if I didn't hold his LP records at a perfect perpendicular to the edge and who would sometimes let me go to shows with him. My brother turned me on to the Bad Brains way back when. I never got to see them live, but we did see H.R. play the Anthrax, a dirty sweaty club where hardcore bands played. If this set is one tenth of the H.R. show we saw, you can quit complaining about the ticket price right there. (Sanborne Stage, Saturday 9:30pm)
Every blogger on the East side has been creaming his pants about the Deadly Syndrome's March release Nolens Volens since about January, and with good reason. The album, a real grower, deserves of every ounce of praise, but the record has nothing on their live show. Everything is more intense. Interludes that approach ponderous on record inhale live, holding tension in the air. (Fold Stage, Edgecliffe, Sunday 5:15pm)
Somehow I've never seen Dawes play. Don't really know how that happened. I was aware of the band, but I hadn't listened much until I heard a podcast of their Newport Folk Fest set. Good stuff. The rootsy Americana thing is right in my wheelhouse, and Dawes brings it with a sweetness and honesty that grabs you by the heart. (Fold Stage, Edgecliffe, Saturday 9:50pm)
I first heard about Girl in a Coma on the Studio 360 podcast last year. Three girls from Texas inspired by Morrissey and their grandfather's Tejano band. Are you not intrigued? (Bates Stage, Sunday 5:00pm)
Highly recommended are some Radio Free Silver Lake favorites that we've seen and already written about quite a bit.
Everest (Fold Stage, Edgecliffe, Saturday 8:35pm)
Leslie & the Badgers (Fold Stage, Edgecliffe, Sunday 3:00pm)
Red Cortez (Fold Stage, Edgecliffe, Sunday 4:05pm)
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros (Bates Stage, Sunday 8:00pm)
Did I mention Conjunction Junction, a free show at outside Malo Restaurant (4326 W. Sunset Blvd. LA, CA 90029) http://awe.sm/59ZGz
