Happy New Year, world! As it turns from 2010 to 2011, I begin to wonder when we will start calling the years twenty-eleven instead of two thousand and eleven. That's going to be damned awkward when you have to say two thousand one hundred and twenty five. Maybe we'll be able to put it off till the twenty-second century. As you can tell, there's not a lot to talk about this week. This is kind of a vacation week for the column.
It's a strikingly odd New Year's Eve, with no Henry Clay People show at Spaceland after two years running, but we shouldn't lean on The Henry Clay People to provide our annual holiday blast every year. (photo from one of these evenings at right by Angela Holtzen) The vacuum they leave could be filed with a show at The Bordello with Very Be Careful or The Warlocks at The Smell or you could take a trip and pay $50. to see The Raveonettes and Autolux at (gulp) The Standard, on the strip... but beware, that's a hot bed for the illiteratus-celebrity hound segment of our fair city. I'm sure it would be a trip and a half.
And of course, on Tuesday, the Radio Free Silver Lake Free Tuesday at LaBrie's in Glendale will play host to Marvelous Toy, whose terrific set last week capped a show with all great performances from the participating bands. The fact it was so well attended, for a holiday week, and for a very cold rainy night, was particularly gratifying. This week we feature favorites, Manhattan Murder Mystery along with College Kids. The rest of the week is a bit of a dry up with nothing on the weekend. Very odd.
Monday, December 27
- FEEL FREE, Run-On Sunshine, Devon Williams, Black Elephant @ The Smell
- Captain Ahab, Nicole Kidman, Kevin Greenspon, Trudgers @ Pehrspace
- Franco Near Death @ The Satellite
- The Long Tangles, Garland, Michelle Vidal, Jack Diamond @ Silver Lake Lounge
DECISION:
This is the slowest Monday I think I've ever seen, but there is The Long Tangles on a bill with Garland at Silver Lake Lounge and Franco Near Death at The Satellite.
Tuesday, December 28
- Marvelous Toy, Manhattan Murder Mystery, College Kids @ LaBrie's
- Freestyle Fellowship, The A-Team, Nocando, Medusa, Flash Bang Grenada, 2MEX, Dibiasi @ Echoplex
- Greenhorse, Go Motion, elcassette @ Silver Lake Lounge
DECISION:
I had a great time at last week's show and was really impressed with the tremendous performances of all the bands. Cody the Band are remarkably accomplished and quite magical live, Nightfur were new to me but knocked me out with such a powerful set I had to get their CD. Marvelous Toy played a fresh, lively program that had the club really rocking out, followed by a 7 member version of Seasons, whose addition of a trumpet was inspired...and I love the theramin. Tonight enjoy the pre-New Year's Eve antics of Manhattan Murder Mystery along with College Kids this week at Radio Free Silver Lake's Free Tuesdays at LaBrie's. And we want to thank Marvelous Toy for a smashing month and thanks to Vivien Cao for the above photo.
Wednesday, December 29
- GIant Drag, White Arrows, Sisu @ The Satellite
- Inclined, Kings Road, John Goraj @ Silver Lake Lounge
- MKNG FRNDZ, Ghost Mom, Cold Showers, Dance Troupe MGM Grand @ The Smell
- Saint Sea Hat, boxViolet, Count Fleet @ 3 of Clubs
DECISION:
A lot of bands I'm not that familiar with, although boxViolet are playing with Saint Sea Hat in Hollywood at 3 of Clubs, and Giant Drag headline a good bill at The Satellite.
Thursday, December 30
- M31, Manhattan Murder Mystery, The Mormons, Kill Kill Kill @ Pehrspace
- The Present Moment, Terminal Twilight, DJ's Disaro, Black Rainbow and Zane @ The Satellite
- The Duke Spirit, Crash Kings @ The Roxy
- "Battle Show III" @ The Smell
- Repeater, Adam Bones, The Danvilles, Verna Beware @ Silver Lake Lounge
- The Growlers, Grand Elegance, Gantez Warrior @ The Echo
DECISION:
See The Growlers at The Echo or Repeater at Silver Lake Lounge. The Duke Spirit play The Roxy. "Battle Show III" at The Smell has a benefit for Holding Hands Music Therapy with an amazing lineup that includes competitions like Luna is Honey VS Tremellow. Just learned...about the great show at Pehrspace with The Mormons and Manhattan Murder Mystery and Kill Kill Kill and M31. Good one.
Friday, December 31
- Abe Vigoda, Dunes, Captain Ahab, The Delabre + more @ Five Stars Bar
- NOFX, Dead To Me, Old Man Markley @ The Wiltern
- Shiny Toy Guns, EC TWins, CC Sheffield, Mei Lwun, Zack Hill, Omar Cash, David Bullock, Ryan Moran, KC Austin, Travis Emmons, Rick Rude @ Roosevelt Hotel
- KCRW and The Fold present The Raveonettes, Autolux @ The Standard
- John Digweed @ Avalon
- Nite Jewel, Kenan Bell @ The Echo
- The Warlocks, The Meek, Black Flamingo, Chelsea Wolfe, LANTVRN @ The Smell
- Very Be Careful @ The Bordello
DECISION:
New Year's Eve and nowhere to go. The photo above is of Oslo, Norway, and I won't be there either. Might be The Smell has the show of the night with The Warlocks and LANTVRN to usher in the new year, though I'm sure NOFX will host a boisterous party over at The Wiltern.
