Everyone loves The Future. It's where we'll spend the rest of our lives, wear jet packs and drink space wine all the time, drive rocket motorcycles, have sex with sexy hyper-evolved aliens with English accents, and yadda yadda that sort of thing....
But, most importantly? It seems like we'll be listening to a lot of great music.
We asked a bunch of our favorite local musicians what they'll be up to next in 2011 -- specifically Seasons, Walking Sleep, Xu Xu Fang, The Lonely Wild, Manhattan Murder Mystery, The Hectors, Everest, The Western States Motel, The Deadly Syndrome, The Spires, Marvelous Toy, Signal Hill, The Californian, Shadow Shadow Shade, The Sweet Hurt, The French Semester, Big Whup, and Pizza! -- and here's what they had to say.
Aaron Lariviere - Walking Sleep
Writing, writing, writing. Hunter has been demoing some of his best songs yet, and rumors abound that other members might get in on the writing game. If all goes according to plan there should be a release coming in the middle of the year, length and format to be determined. We'll also be touring a lot more in 2011... East Coast, Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and everywhere in between, hopefully. As always we'll do our part to keep Los Angeles entertaining, and we'll be playing a lot here too. 2011 might just be our year-- fingers crossed!
Jason Soda – Everest
After spending the better part of the last half of the year on the road, we're enjoying the comforts of our home and company of our friends. Soon we'll be putting together the next batch of songs that will be the next Everest record. The plan is to solidify the new songs by road testing the material in small off beat venues on the west coast before coming home to record. Next year is gonna a busy one and we're ready for it. I don't think you'll even have to keep your eyes pealed for us as we're for sure gonna be coming through your town or city with serious regularity. And when we do, come out and let's hang.
Brian Canning – Shadow Shadow Shade
We are doing the thursday night residency at The Satellite in February. We are also recording new material and writing a bunch.
Corrine Diner – The Hectors
We're putting out a split 7" single with Seasons in early 2011, most likely February. And our first full-length album should follow in the spring. Then I'm sure there'll be some kind of video where Jim builds a rocket capsule from scratch or something.
Johnny Seasons – Seasons
What you can expect for the first half of 2011 for Seasons is a Vinyl Split/Single release for our new song "These United States" along with The Hectors' new song "Your Favorite Year" sometime in February. A new music video for our song "of Our Discontent" which is gonna be directed by the very talented Chris Ewing who did our "Light, Lost" video as well. As for the second half expect a Echo Residency to go along with our last Seasons EP "Fall" sometime in late Summer/Fall. For now you can visit our bandcamp site to download all our current releases as well as old EP'S too.
Geoff Geis - Big Whup & Pizza!
Both Big Whup and Pizza! have completed new recordings that will be released soon.
Riaz Tejani – The French Semester
A little more rest, then another recording.
John Graney – The Californian
Well. We have started recording our first full length record. No word yet on release. That's going just as fast as our empty pockets can push it along. But we have indeed begun work on it. About 14 songs worth of rhythm section stuff has been recorded. Also, we're taking The Californian out of town for the first time in late January. Nothing huge, just a few dates in the general southwest corner of the country. We have a lot more people these days telling us they want to hear more and see more of us - so most importantly, "Next" we intend to give them what they want.
Carl Jordan – The Western States Motel
2011 should be a good one for The Western States Motel, if for no other reason than there will finally be a new album. I'm pushing to get this thing out to the world in late february, to coincide with the radio free silver lake / LaBrie's residency we will be doing that month. It's called Freeway Freeway Riverbed. I felt a little weird sticking with that title, because it kind of has the same ring to it as Shadow Shadow Shade, who I am a big fan of. But it's been the working title of the album for a couple of years now....when I read that Afternnoons had changed their name to Shadow Shadow Shade, I kind of thought to myself "well, there goes that title." But I was never able to come up with anything I liked better. I asked Brian from SSS if he minded at all, and he seemed to think it was a good album title, and said I should stick with it. I'm probably overthinking the whole thing. Thanks!
Matthew Teardrop – Manhattan Murder Mystery
We're almost done with our first full-length album. I think it's gonna be pretty good. We'll see.
Jesse Hoy – The Deadly Syndrome
We're going to make more music, and play more shows. The songs will get better and the shows will get louder! Well that's not entirely true. We don't really have control over the house mix, but we are always trying to do what we do better. So, yeah "getting better" is what's next for us.
Andrew Carroll - The Lonely Wild
We are just now (like today) finishing mixing on our debut EP. We're releasing it digitally and on limited edition vinyl early next year. We're also going to go back to the studio to record a full-length album that will be out later next year. We're also thinking about some impromptu shows during sunrise in the mountains. And we're definitely eyeing SXSW. Maybe we'll drive out there in a van and bus on the side of the road.
Jordan Huddock – Marvelous Toy
We have been sitting on a full-length album for the last year or so called "not moving." If all goes right with the world, this will come out within the next few months. at this rate, we also have enough songs for a follow-up EP. but i'm getting ahead of myself.
Jason Bays – The Spires
The Spires are starting a new record this month. We always start new records around this time of year for some reason. Then we’re gonna get in the van and spread the word.
Wendy Wang – The Sweet Hurt
I'm writing a bunch of new songs and demo-ing out stuff. I just got a new drum machine too!
As for whats next for us, with two of us (Dave and Rishi) now living in NYC, we are planning on doing an east coast tour in the spring. Additionally we have started writing some new tunes to hopefully put out in the near future!
Bobby Tamkin – Xu Xu Fang
In 2011, Xu Xu Fang will give you 14 new songs, a new album, live shows, and a variety of fresh, hand rolls created with eye contact, by Devin Lee Johnson.
