Are you ready for another Tuesday night of musical thrills? Tonight our January residency band The Monolators will be joined by Kissing Cousins and Hexham Heads. So load up on free homemade pretzels and cheap booze at LaBrie's, our hub for RFSL free showcases of the best local music. Doors open at 8:30 pm and the show begins at 9 pm. So be there or be a sad square. Here are some free downloads and info on the tracks from each of the bands:
Heather of the Kissing Cousins on “You Bring Me Down”:
"You Bring Me Down" is the first song of our upcoming Double 7"/EP Unfortunate End coming out this spring on Velvet Blue Music. I chose this one because it really represents our band in its current form. Since our last record we lost the flute and added another guitar. I am really excited about these new songs, and '"You Bring Me Down" sets the foundation for the theme and tones for the rest of the record. My lyrics are usually pretty obvious--love, loss, etc. Enjoy!!!!!!

Eli of The Monolators on “Your Mother’s Lover Eating Cake”:
Once again, here's a song that we're going to play this coming week in our set. "Your Mother's Lover Eating Cake" comes off of Our Tears Have Wings album from 2005--we used to play it all the time when we were a two-piece, but then sometime around 2007 or so we became a trio and it somehow slipped out of our set list. I can't actually remember the last time we played it-probably at Mr. T's sometime in the vague past, and this lineup of the current Monolators has never played it. In fact, we're going to try running through it for the very first time this Sunday, two days before the show. Yep.
I wrote this in late 2004 as part of one of those "write and record an album in a month" challenge dealies (in fact, it was this one: nasoalmo.org). The idea being that, as a motivation to be productive, one sets an artificial deadline for one's self of four weeks, and then you have to go off and write and record enough material for a half-hour album of music. I never did anything with the resulting "album" itself, but almost all of the songs wound up on either Our Tears Have Wings or in the Cobra Lilies' repertoire: "Captain In The Army," "Tiny Dot In The Deep Blue Sea," "She Won't Come Back," "Spider In The Woods," "Clang Clang The Horseman Rang," those were all on there. It was really sloppy and bad and had that desired "recorded-in-a-tin-can" sound that we all covet, but I was pretty proud of it. "Your Mother's Lover Eating Cake" was on there too, and started off as a peppy little swing-jazz number. I tried (emphasis on "tried") playing a little snappy rolling snare drum part with brushes and layered about three lead vocals all on at the same time. (Tip: if you're unsure about how your singing voice sounds, three of you all the same time sounds somewhat less unsure..I think.) It also has this "doo doo doo way down" vocal bit that I ended up hating, but I don't have the session files anymore, just the mixdown, so in it stays!
I think I played that version for Mary maybe once, and never listened to it again (until just now as I'm typing this), so the version that wound up on the record is significantly different. I'm not sure which one I prefer, so I'm gonna give you both, and let you deeecide.

Ken of Hexham Heads on “You Make Me Feel Like a Ghost”:
This song was recorded live in our rehearsal space downtown. It's about the kind of people who make you feel like you don't even exist, but it's set to a disco beat. When there are no more discos in hell, this song will walk the earth.
