This week Jed is riding all over the Valley on his bicycle delivering the LA Times. When he saw how much the Ticketmaster service charges were for Coachella tickets this year, he had to go out and get a paper route to cover his Visa bill--and this is a guy who pays no rent.
This week's guest columnist Jordan Hudock of Marvelous Toy (who play April 18 at the Satellite) told me you couldn't pay him to spend three days in the desert with a bunch of weekend warriors. Then somebody offered to pay him. His side project the Henry Clay People plays the festival Saturday at 1:00pm on the Mojave Stage.

1) I get a real kick out of watching the Walkmen play. Lead singer Hamilton Leithauser is like a boxer when he sings... jumping around and gearing up for that next note he's gonna scream at the top of his lungs. So I got a REAL kick out of watching them cover this Lindsay Buckingham classic... somewhere in the middle of watching the video, Christie Brinkley drove up next to me in a red Ferrari.
2) Back in 1971, Harry Nilsson released an album called the Point, an animated movie accompanied the album and it aired on ABC as the movie of the week. The Point! was a fable about a boy named Oblio, the only round-headed person in the pointed village, where by law everyone and everything had to have a point. Harry Nilsson says: "I was on acid and I looked at the trees and I realized that they all came to points, and the little branches came to points, and the houses came to point. I thought, "Oh! everything has a point, and if it doesn't, then there's a point to it,'" more proof that acid trips make for great television. Also worth noting, Dustin Hoffman was the narrator (and father's voice) in the original airing of the show. Here's one of my favorite songs from the album/film. You should watch the whole thing if you can though.
3) Here's a song from my childhood. My dad used to sing this to me when I was a little kid and I guess it stuck with me. Check out the semi-embarrassing false start.
4) Another song I grew up with... Jacques Brel's "Marieke." Brel was one of the most prolific singer/songwriters of his time. I recently bought his Greatest Hits on itunes which consisted of a whopping 47 tracks. Perhaps best known for his song "Le Moribond" (which was later adapted to English and titled "Seasons in the Sun," a big hit for one Terry Jacks), Brel died of lung cancer in 1978. He was 49 years old. Watching him sing this is mesmerizing.
5) I'm not trying to self-promote with this. I wasn't gonna do any of that... but I have to share this video. When I was on tour with HCP [the Henry Clay People] we opened for the band Drive-By Truckers. I developed a little man-crush on their keyboardist Jay Gonzalez and we became texting buddies after the tour ended. Before we parted ways, I gave him a copy of MT's [Marvelous Toy] new EP and a few months later he told me that his five-year-old kid Billy loved the song "Waiting for the Fire' and sang it all the time. I told him it would be rad to video it and put it up on our web site. Not only did Jay film it, but he made a full-on music video for the song starring Billy. It's too awesome for me not to share, so here it is.
6) Here's a fantastic song from a fantastic movie. If you haven't seen Waiting for Guffman, do it. This song was a tour favorite last year... it's catchy as hell too.
7) Lastly, I hope you all have a great day.
