One of our all-time favorite bands, the Spires play Friday night at Lot 1 Café in Echo Park, along with J. Irvin Dally and Naive Thieves. Radio Free Silver Lake presents the show. Before catching the Spires live it would be easy to imagine that the rumors of their greatness must be exaggerated, but seeing their show myself I thought, “how did the people who recommended this band get so deep inside my head. It’s like they read my mind and knew exactly what I love.” Soundwise the band leans hard on the Velvet Underground, which is to say that they’ve got guitar, poetry and reverb in spades. The Spires are from Ventura, putting them in an orbit slightly wide of the Silver Lake circuit. Take advantage of any chance you get to see them play in Los Angeles.
