The talk of the town for the last week at the shows I've been to has been all about the extravaganza on Monday where Seasons comes back to the stage after a short hiatus, emerging out of the fog like in the picture to the right, performing after a screening of Pass The Music at Echoplex. And with Manhattan Murder Mystery, Torches and Body Parts on the bill, this would be the show of the week if there weren't so many 'shows-of-the-week' this week.
Our buddies, The Lonely Wild have a show out at Federal Bar on Tuesday night at the Buzzbands LA event starring The Rudy Friedman Orchestra. With The New Limb as an added attraction this becomes a top entry. Another special show is the Spaceland Under The Stars free outdoor evening concert downtown on Thursday at Pershing Square featuring two very hot bands at the moment, The Dead Ships and NO.
Pehrspace has a good show on Friday night with WALK and Young Empress for an impressive line up. Then Saturday I have my Feed Your Head show at Lot 1 with Saint Sea Hat and The WildBunch, along with the debut of John Seasons new solo act, and Ryan Ellis who played a great set for my show back in March. That also happen to be the day of The 3rd New Los Angeles Folk Festival in Altadena at Zorthian Ranch Farm which has to have one of the greatest line ups of any festival this summer. Bummer I have to miss it. Sunday you can catch Warm Weather at Bootleg Bar.

DECISION:
There should be quite a remarkable turn out for the screening of Pass The Music tonight at Echoplex. The rockumentary is a fascinating window into a particular time in the local music scene, circa 2008, featuring glimpses into the progression, development, and reasons for some of the bands that were established and just coming into the world at that time. Bands like The Happy Hollows, Radars To The Sky, The Movies and The Henry Clay People share stories about their process, their perspective and just plain trying to get along. I found it illuminating the first time I saw it. The other featured band is Seasons and they play in the live show following the screening. Everyone is anticipating the return to the stage of this stalwart band who, along with Torches, Body Parts and Manhattan Murder Mystery, will entertain the multitudes.
Upstairs at The Echo, American Royalty conclude their July residency and Andy Clockwise showcases his new album, War Stories, over at The Viper Room.

Great show in a beautiful venue. Elsewhere, there is Dhani Harrison's band, Thenewno2 at Amoeba and the talented singer/songwriter Ethan Gold is on the bill at Bootleg Bar.

DECISION:
I have to dash out of work and make a b-line for the 704 so I can get down Wilshire to the subway to get me to Pershing Square by 7:30 to see NO (at right) and The Dead Ships in their free evening concert. I've seen NO a couple of times this summer and I've been transfixed by their seriously professional presentation offering sterling harmonies on top of highly memorable songs that feature Bradley Hanan Carter's aching baritone vocals. The Dead Ships have long eluded my attempts to see them but I'll make up for that tonight.
The Entrance Band are having a Record Release Show at The Satellite and old friends Alpine Decline return to L.A. from their new home in China, half a world away, for a show at Home Room. How I wish I could see them.

- Beachwood Sparks, Tomorrows Tulips @ The Echo
- Dax Riggs, Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel, Old Testament @ The Satellite
DECISION:
Another reason to head downtown presents itself as The Belle Brigade play California Plaza at noon today. A perfect band for a hot, sunny afternoon in the park. Sun Araw continue to be one of the most talked-about bands in town and are moving to The Music Box for a big time show, opening for Real Estate. WALK and Young Empress will assure a night of beautiful music at Pehrspace.

- Feed Your Head presents Saint Sea Hat, The WildBunch, John Seasons, Ryan Ellis @ Lot 1
- Cosmonauts, Dirt Dress, Plateaus, Mutations @ The Smell
- Gabe Heart & The 4th Wall, Brass Tax, Goblin King, Surprise Vacation @ Redwood Bar
- Radio Moscow, The Dirty Street, The Shrine @ The Satellite
- The Colourist, Kiev, Monsters Calling Home @ Bootleg Bar
- The Condors, The Glimmer Stars, Talking Robots + 2 Bands @ @ Mr. T's Bowl
Decision:
I know that the 3rd Los Angeles Folk Festival is happening today out in Altadena, at the Zorthian Ranch Farm...and the line up includes some of my favorites like Dirt Bird, Fort King, Geronimo Getty, Leslie Stevens, Pisces, Restavrant and Tommy Santee Klaws just to name a few. But it's going to be hot, so if you chose to stay in the city, I highly recommend the show going on over at Lot 1 put on by Feed Your Head with Saint Sea Hat, The WildBunch, John Seasons and Ryan Ellis. I'm very pleased with this line up and anticipate a pretty great show. If you're around, drop on by. There are other good shows around as well, but I won't talk about them.
Sunday, August 5
- Grand Ole Echo w/ Nenry Wagons, The Hi-Ho's, Stephen Sowan @ The Echo
- Rose Windows, Marlene Marlene, New Slang @ Redwood Bar
- Warm Weather, Go West, Young Man @ Bootleg Bar
- Abrakadabra, Cruddy, ZINE, Sex Wounds @ The Smell
- College, Anoraak, Electric Youth @ Echoplex
- DIIV, Part Time, Melted Toys @ The Echo
Just when you thought it might be safe to take a night off, Warm Weather put on a show over at Bootleg Bar with Go West, Young Man which means some serious singing will be going on over there. Warm Weather (at right) are a tight-knit unit that use powerful, soaring vocals in much the same way as Auditorium, who I paired them with a few months ago at Lot 1. They complimented each other beautifully.

It’s rarely easy to interview people, but one of the most important parts of the interview is to focus on the person you’re talking to.
