Last week was one hell of a week with five monumental concerts, three giant Cinerama films at the Arclight Cinerama Dome, and I'm just bouncing off the walls from all the audio and visual stimulation. I don't know if life gets better than this. From Dirt Bird and Lavender Diamond on Monday to The Album Leaf on Saturday, I think I saw some of my favorite shows of the year! All this activity may leave this week's Low Down a little thread bare, but the coming week has it's share of must-see attractions.
Radio Free Silver Lake is really proud to pair up with Origami Vinyl to have been asked to host the Double LP Release Show for The World Record that features an amazing line up of talent from Francisco The Man to The Damselles & the TC4, and a lot in between, at Echoplex on Thursday.
O.K., I'm convinced someone is trying to kill us with festivals. What the hell do you think we are?! Beginning Thursday is the first day of the three-day Culture Collide Festival which happens all over the Silver Lake/Echo Park area and which invites artists from all over the world to come to our little musical hotbed of a neighborhood and participate in the creative energy that oozes out of our sidewalks. Welcome to all, from U.S.A. bands like Of Montreal to Pageants to Unknown Mortal Orchestra of New Zealand or The Netherlands' Go Back To The Zoo and Niki and The Dove from Sweden.
Saturday is one of my favorite festivals of all, The 14th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival which is maybe the most suburban/urban music festival of the year. I plan on spending the day here as it's a chance to see good friends and to catch up with bands I haven't seen yet. Sunday hosts the Abbot Kinney Festival 2012 in Venice and offers a relaxed, beach-related atmosphere to the festival environment. Get your festival on this week, as next up are Halloween events, followed by the onslaught of year end holidays.

DECISION:
So tonight I intend to see Gangi (above) at their record release show at The Satellite. I caught Gangi most recently at a side show set at El Cid in the middle of the afternoon during Silver Lake Jubilee this summer and it turned out to be just about the best set I saw in the entire festival. The burst of creativity that flooded the room was something to behold, and even thought there were only a few people there, there was electricity in the room.
I would love to have seen The Shins performing their latest album, which I seem to like more than anyone else. But having suffered through them at the Hollywood Palladium a few years ago, where their delicate intricate melodies were rendered as hard rock anthems, with the fans screaming their lyrics into my ear and the terrible, bass-heavy dynamics of that venue ruining the music, and knowing it would sound the same at the Gibson, I'll pass. I love The Shins, but if I can't see them in a decent size club, with good acoustics, I'll wait until they're less popular.
There is also a great show out in Santa Monica at The Central starring Go West Young Man with the sterling line up of The Breakups and College Kids.

DECISION:
KCRW is presenting a benefit show for Mayla Embry (at right) and the wonderful artists donating their time to this most heartfelt and worthy effort; Father John Misty, Great Northern, Becky Stark, Inara George and Daniel Lanois will put on a beautiful show at the Bootleg Theatre. Nikki and Aaron Embry's three year old daughter Mayla has been diagnosed with leukemia, so let's give back to this wonderful family that has given so much to this music community for so many years. Get tickets here.
And here is a link to make donations.

DECISION:
Culture Collide continues, but I have always attended The Eagle Rock Music Festival and I will be there again this year. The line up is a bit more diverse and unfamiliar, but that will provide the fun of discovery. There are a ton of big shows tonight from Peter Gabriel at Hollywood Bowl to Ricky Lee Jones on The Broad Stage or medium shows like The Dustbowl Revival at McCabe's. You can get your Grateful Dead fix from two perspectives, either Further, which features two actual Dead members, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, or Dark Star Orchestra, which is a tribute band to the real thing. The former at The Greek, the latter at El Rey.

DECISION:
Abbot Kinney Festival is probably the quaintest and most laid back of all the festivals this weekend. If I can make it to my third festival of the week I will be sure to spend time in Robin's Sculpture Garden to see Tommy Santee Klaws, Dirt Bird and others in this superb program. Headliners include Nite Jewel and American Royalty. And Culture Collide Festival wraps up today with more terrific acts like Chad VanGaalen and an after party at Echoplex.
Hey, like me you're looking at last years Culture Collide fest schedule. Their website has some bad links that take you back to 2011.
