Finally, a week without a festival. But the void is filled with exceptional bands playing some incredible shows all over town anyway. There aren't even many big-name shows to compete with wide range of local talent to check out as we advance towards the Labor Day holiday, a week from Monday.
I put this up on Monday morning, but it never appeared apparently. So I'll try again.
I had to deal with the loss of a pet this weekend, so this column is severly abbreviated.

O.K., tonight belongs to The Janks, now in the final night of their smashing residency at The Satellite, they offer the stellar line up of P L a N E T S, The Diamond Light and Infantree to conclude this successful run. The competition is formidable as Kelley Stoltz' wonderful side project, Sonny & The Sunsets take to The Echo. DECISION:
Few artists come with a more impressive pedigree than Boys School tonight at El Cid. As a former member of both Amnion and Lord Huron, Brett Farkas is already an alumni of two of the best bands I've ever heard in L.A. Our dear friends, Everest, are back in town for a show at The Satellite and one should take the opportunity to catch up with them since Russell Pollard has moved to Nashville, we may not see them as often as we used to. The Happy Casualties are at Lot 1. NO are on the bill for a second time at The Troubadour , tonight for the Yacht gig and there's a nice after-work show downtown in Grand Park for a new series called "Grand Park Out Of Office Concerts" to celebrate the end of the work week. This weeks killer line up is Spirit Vine, Halfbluud and Infantree; definitely worth a trip downtown.

- Cafe Tacuba @ Nokia Theater
- Raw Geronimo, Meat Wave, Sun Duel @ The Smell
- Antenna The End, Chameleon Conductor, The Hollywood Arson Project, Emma Ejwertz & Sarah Agajanian. Clepto @ The Troubadour
DECISION:
Amazing show out at the Skirball with Jenny O, In The Valley Below and Body Parts; all headlinine-worthy in their own right. The Greek goes '80s with Andy Bell and Howard Jones, among others. A wonderful fusion of art, music and intellectual exploration is the best way to describe the interesting program out at Temple Ad Hoc near downtown featuring the music/philosophy/multi-media art of Earth Like Planets. also performing will be Twisted Together, which is violinist/vocalist Christina Stanley's project, described on the event page as being "inspired by physical properties of sounds, musical form, sacred geometry and city structures". I like the sound of this.

- Steve Carlson w/ Natalie Gelman, Eddie Berman & The Iron Rails, Anahita Skye Record Release Show, Rose Finkelstein @ Hotel Cafe
DECISION:
The Damselles and the TC4 always put on a sexy, smart and generally fantastic show. They have a new EP hot off the press that they talked about for How We Made the Record. As far as tribute shows go, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the better catalogs out there to mine. The bands haven't been announced, but it's at The Smell. The show is sure to be raw, dirty and unforgettable.

- Karen Kilgariff @ Bootleg Bar
- Sweet Bump It, Michael Rey & The Woebegone's, Champagne Leader @ Bootleg Bar
