As the festival-goers return from Texas the local calendar ramps up with tons of shows, both big and small, that would light up any week. On Saturday night Radio Free Silver Lake will present a show to bid a fond farewell to one of the most reliable and much loved bands in the local scene. After nearly ten years, Radars To The Sky (at right from a 2012 show) are wrapping up their long run with a show/celebration at El Cid also featuring two of the other best bands it's our pleasure to know, The Californian and The World Record. We at RFSL are excited to announce a ticket giveaway for this event. Check back later in the week.
Beginning the week with a very festive line up of St. Patrick's Day shows (today) at a number of venues, Charlie Clark's Irish shindig at Harvard & Stone appears to have the edge. Something called The St. Paddy's All Star Jam Band provides the music and is made up of local talent including Mr. Clark, Kaitlin Wolfberg, Ryan Fuller and more. Lot 1 has a good show also, check the Monday listings.
This is also the week when St. Vincent comes back to town for two shows. And I stupidly put purchasing tickets for her Friday show at The Wiltern on the back burner when suddenly it was too late. SOLD OUT. She's also playing a set at The Grammy Museum on Thursday, but I'm already spoken for that evening. As with any show that I've seen by St. Vincent, I'm sure these shows will be more than merely memorable and I regret not attending.
Electro-rock genius pioneers, Kraftwerk, are playing an historic set of 8 3D Concerts this week at The Walt Disney Concert Hall highlighting eight of their groundbreaking albums, recreating the set of shows they played in January in Sweden. Beginning with Autobahn on Tuesday at 7:30 and Radio-Activity at 10:30 (these are separate shows) they continue through Friday night presenting two albums per night.

Way too crowded schedule tonight making me actually relieved that I got a ticket months ago to see the lushly symphonic orchestral band Lost In The Trees (at right) as they embark on a new, stripped down musical direction. also on the bill at The Echo is Hi Ho Silver Oh. Moving beyond the melancholy thoughtfulness of his previous work, Ari Picker, is channeling a new-found hopefulness into the new Lost In The Trees, is a new freedom and compactness in the music.
St. Vincent is sitting down for an interview at The Grammy Museum today with Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, followed by a musical performance which sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Tomorrow she plays The Wiltern.
The Lonely Wild are back home and playing on the Strip at The Roxy and there's a good show at just about every venue.

DECISION:
St. Vincent is on tour with her recently released self-titled album and has her official Los Angeles show at The Wiltern tonight. The less said about the fact that I'm missing this is the best way to handle it. I can lick my wounds with Afternoons (at right) at Silver Lake Lounge, or Tashaki Miyagi at The Church on York, or a recently transplanted band from Boston who pleased me at Los Globos a couple of weeks ago, Winter, who are at Pehrspace.

DECISION:
Tonight is the farewell show for longtime RFSL friends Radars To The Sky as Andrew and Kate Spitzer prepare to spend a year in Washington D.C., along with other band members moving on. It makes me especially nostalgic as they were one of the very first local bands I got to know personally as people and was warmly welcomed as a friend and colleague. It's been my honor to call them friends. And Radio Free Silver Lake is proud to present this show at El Cid with two more of our favorite bands, The Californian and The World Record making it practically a family affair. After nearly ten years, Radars To The Sky are taking what they call a possible permanent hiatus. We'll see...and hope.
Examples abound all over the rest of the town that attest to the still growing and ever-changing music scene that we are swimming in. My Hawaii at Bigfoot Lodge, The Districts and Gavin Turek playing a SXSW Aftermath Show at Echoplex, Criminal Hygiene opening for The Orwells at The Troubadour, even Swedish post-punk band The Sounds at Club Nokia.
