The Coachella 2017 festival's second weekend continues to impact the local music scene so there's not a lot to offer this week.
Spiral Stairs is the side project of Scott Kannberg (at right), guitarist for Pavement, and his new album, Doris And The Daggers is a reflection of his passage into middle age, with all its ups and downs. Collaborations with members of The National, Broken Social Scene and Kelley Stoltz add color and craft to an album already being heaped with praise. He drops into the Resident for a show on Thursday night which includes a return of local favorites The Henry Clay People, along with High Cameras for the week's highlight.
Last Wednesday I witnessed an evening of pure unadulterated power pop nirvana in the form of a concert by The New Pornographers highlighted by selections from their great new album at The Theatre at Ace Hotel. It was the kickoff of their current tour and high energy and a great spirit of fun set the audience's spirits soaring. Smash hit followed smash hit until one felt punch-drunk from the assault.
