The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "Got So Hooked On A Feeling, I Started Dealing In A Stage Of Grief So Demanding I Got A Stand-in...")

On Friday, Coachella 2017 opens for its first weekend at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio and it would successfully suck all the air out of our local scene, except that there are top notch acts performing almost every night this week right here in Los Angeles. While Radiohead, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar woo the desert audience, Sigur Rós plays three special shows with The L.A. Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall Thursday through Saturday as part of Iceland's Reykjavík Festival, Simple Plan are at The Wiltern on Friday, and Coheed and Cambria breeze through the Hollywood Palladium on Saturday.

The highlight of the week for me is The New Pornographers (above) at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, Wahahatchee open the night, on Wednesday. This is the tour celebrating the release of their seventh album, Whiteout Conditions, and as promised each ticket-goer at this concert on Wednesday will receive a copy of that album. In spite of the absence of Dan Bejar on this enterprise, the band still delivers sharp and pungent lyrics wrapped in a sunny power-pop setting. This is the first night of their tour and even though it's in the sit-down environment of The Theatre at Ace Hotel, and I lucked out with a ticket in the 8th row, it's hard to imagine an audience remaining seated at a New Pornographers show.

It's been many years since I've seen Minus The Bear, but I always enjoyed them in concert and this Wednesday, while I'm at The New Pornographers, they are at The Belasco Theatre.

There's a bit of a festival taking place at The Echo and Echoplex Thursday throught Saturday called DRILL: LOS ANGELES which features sets from Wire, Bob Mould, Mikal Cronin + string & horn ensemble, Julia Holter, Mild High Club, Laetitia Sadler and a bunch of others. spread out over the three days.

I can heartily recommend Tashaki Miyaki in their final Monday night residency gig at Echoplex, and King Washington playing at The Hi Hat on Tuesday for the Night Talks residency wrap up. The Unending Thread at The Smell on Wednesday, Bebopalula are at The Satellite Thursday night, and Rough Church and The World Record play the final Taix Lounge Friday night event. Catch a rare set by local stalwarts The Pity Party on Saturday at The Smell, and then spend Sunday afternoon with Leslie Stevens & The Badgers, Jamie Wyatt, and others at this year's inaugural edition of Grand Ole Echo at The Echo, and you have a great show every day this week!

The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "Change Lies In Every Direction, So Now I Guess We Just Begin Again...")

The best shows of the week all involve local artists, both big and small. The Airborne Toxic Event (left) have gotten so huge that they had to book four dates at El Rey after the third one sold out. They play this Thursday and on the two subsequent Thursdays, Mar. 30 and Apr. 6, and added Friday, Apr. 7th, for which there are still some tickets available. Since The Belle Brigade stopped, Ethan Gruska has pursued his own project, culminating in a debut album called Slomotionary, and he opens for Agnes Obel on Tuesday, also at El Rey.

Very exciting local show at Bootleg Bar on Sunday night with Nate Cole, who we all know and love from Castledoor, and the constantly changing and evolving Tenlons Fort and Avi Buffalo rounding out a heavy lineup. There's also Seasons at Taix Lounge on Friday. and The Buttertones Record Release Party at Bootleg Bar on Saturday.

Finally The Shins are resurfacing with a revived career thanks to a new album, Heartworms, coming out next Friday and a preliminary concert tour to introduce us to it. Kid Wave open the show at El Rey, which will sell out moments after tickets go on sale on Tuesday. (The tickets must have sold out before this cause they never became available...too bad) (actually a block of tickets were released on Friday morning and I managed to score one at box office price...SO I'M GOING!)

The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "They Say It's Never Over - The Chipping Away At The Boulder, The Spinning Of The Wheels...")

Some nice shows this week leading up to a weekend of numerous events, especially on Saturday when I have my Feed Your Head show which is pitted against a stopover in town by The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Matt Pond PA. The Brian Jonestown Massacre just played a three night run at Teragram Ballroom last year in May but they're back for a big one night show at The Fonda Theatre. Miranda Lee Richards opens the evening.

My Feed Your Head show is a real thrill for me because Seasons will be headlining and they haven't played this gig for a few years and that's too long. A new project by Malcolm Sosa called 123Death will be making their debut at Lot 1 in the 10:15 spot and Joe Levi and Westerner bracket the whole thing.

Like Pinback, Matt Pond PA ent on hiatus about a year ago but,  Pinback, they are already returning to the concert stage when they come back to town to play Resident on Saturday.

The Smell is hosting the WFSU Fest 2017 on Saturday and Sunday featuring over 20 performers.

During the week you can catch sets by Psychic Love, Gold Star, I See Hawks in L.A., The Dead Ships and Two Sheds, just to name a few.

Of course, tonight is Oscar night (Sunday Feb, 26), so this is a bare bones Low Down as I have to don my rented tux and attend my seventeenth Academy Awards. If anyone had told me as a kid that I would actually go to the Oscars, and seventeen times, I would have called them crazy. Maybe I am? Or just lucky, depending on your point of view.

As we get through the third week of the shit storm that is known as the Trump presidency, we encounter Valentine's Day on Tuesday, so let's go out and see some music. There are some great shows associated with this peculiar holiday, many with a decidedly dark tone, no doubt a result of the strange climate we find ourselves in.

The biggest of these shows is "A Night of Sad Songs & Love Songs" hosted by Cuz'n Roy at Echoplex and featuring some of the best and brightest in the local scene including Avid Dancer, Banta, Donna Bummer and the Histrionics, Emerson Star, Gregg Garvey, Joel Jerome, Lauren Ruth Ward, Maxim Ludwig, Miya Folick, Ryan Fuller, Samira Winter, and so many more you'll need to refer to the Tuesday entry for a complete list of artists.

The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "Why Do I Assume These Things Are Bad, Bad, Burnt Down, Burnt Down...")

I had a great time at four shows over the last four days so this week I may have to take it a little easy but there are some real gems out there that are worthy of attention. 

Ethan Gruska of The Belle Brigade will introduce selections from his debut solo album Slowmotionary on Tuesday at Hotel Cafe. De La Cuesta is hosting a weekly show every Thursday all month long at Stories Books & Cafe, and this week they feature Avid Dancer on the bill. Mark your calendars for Friday, Feb. 10 and come out to Lot 1 for the politically charged event Swans Against Trump. Here you'll witness Madame Headdress performing "Cats Against Trump", making a mockery of our current political state.

Took my first dip in the "Desert Nights" series at The Standard last Wednesday to see Haunted Summer (below) and it's such a nice intimate event I should have gone much sooner than this. Haunted Summer floated through a hypnotic, spacey set that was trance-inducing and Brendan Eder Ensemble followed with his distinctly unique woodwind, brass and percussion classical/jazz fusion. Thursday and Friday were the Pinback (at right) shows at Echoplex and The Echo about which I will write more later. Saturday was the Vert Ventures/Feed Your Head show at Lot 1  And now I rest.

The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "Look What's Happening Out In The Street...")

The Women's March and demonstrations on Saturday were the perfect tonic for those of us who are grasping at straws since the election of the Orange Hitler. Especially proud that Los Angeles hosted the largest event anywhere in America. 750,000! And the overwhelming positive energy on display, along with strong representation of all walks of life, made it feel very much like the beginning of a huge movement. It's going to take all of us working together to combat the inevitable disaster of this child/man in the White House.

There's music this week, but it doesn't feel like the appropriate subject to focus on at the moment.
